When I finished Dolly Madison and the War of 1812, I was surprised to discover that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Libby Carty McNamee did a good job of making Dolly Madison feel like a real person, during a real time period of history. The voice she used worked for Dolly Madison better than it did for Susanna Bolling. The book felt like it was drawing from the 1800s to write about the 1800s. I learned a lot about the war of 1812 - big details such as cause, and how the battle was won, but also smaller details such as what the political culture was like at the time, or what the cultural attitude was towards the war.
Content-wise it's not spotless, but I think it would actually be a good addition to a curriculum to learn about the war of 1812. The book also afforded a lot of discussion opportunities (see the blog - link in bio!).

The Bronze Bow is a good book. The heart of the story is Daniel’s wrestle with anger and hatred in the face of the love of Christ. It’s wrapped in action, adventure and a hint of romance. The writing is intriguing, and it’s a clean story with depth enough for an adult to enjoy it, and action enough to be enjoyed by a kid.
I really loved Daniel’s character arc, and his struggle to die to self and let go of his anger. He’s taken to the end of everything – loss of his team, his leader, his friends, everything except for his anger, and has to learn to submit to Christ.
Needless to say, this is a book I recommend. As a side benefit, it provides a lot of great discussion opportunities, and would make a great addition to homeschool curriculum.

Susanna's Midnight Ride is a unique story covering

Susanna's Midnight Ride is a unique story covering a little known revolutionary war hero. It definitely made me curious about Susanna Bolling and the part she played in the Revolutionary War.
The story discusses the war in a very real way, and doesn't shy away from many of the hardships endured by those waiting at home (and a few from those away fighting).
Though there are definitely some minor content concerns in the story to be aware of, it's an interesting story about Susanna Bolling and her heroic ride to warn Lafayette about a kidnapping plot.

The Sinking City(by @christinecohen_author ) is one of the most solid books I have read, meaning that the world between the covers seems like it could very well be an alternate reality: Venice, Italy kept afloat by spells.
The quality of the writing is superb, and you end up rooting for, and caring for, the characters.
But it is indeed a "fairytale with teeth" as the author said.
And I think that's part of what made it so real.

I've not reviewed these books, but I've read several of Patricia St. John's books. She beautifully illustrates what happens when Christ comes into brokenness.

I've not reviewed this book, but it seemed fitting for Good Friday. It was the book that brought me closest to crying as any book I've read. It shows how the gospel changes and shapes lives through the tragic yet beautiful story of a young girl named Mary and her basket of flowers.
